El Progreso Department

El Progreso is a department in Guatemala. The capital is Guastatoya and the largest city is Sanarate.

El Progreso is the smallest department in population in Guatemala, having a 99% of Spanish-native speakers. it's situated in the central part of Guatemala, next to the Guatemala city to the East, to Baja Verapaz in the South, to Zacapa to the west, and to Jalapa the north. The climate in El Progreso variates depending on the region, to the east is hotter than the west, and it also has great extensions of desert-like lands, with cactus on the mountains when it doesn't rain. Near the Motagua river, the largest in Guatemala that crosses all over El Progreso to Zacapa, in direction to Izabal, it can be found big extensions of green lands, and cities and villages near it. The Motagua river often overfloods during the rainy season. Leaving many families without houses and lands near it.
